BioGaia’s probiotic strains
Meet Lactobacillus reuteri – our patented probiotic
In the past decade, research on bacteria and their significance to our health has increased.
For over 30 years, BioGaia has been researching a type of probiotic bacteria known as Lactobacillus reuteri. By partnering with leading universities and conducting rigorous clinical trials, we ensure our strains are of the highest quality.
BioGaia’s probiotic supplements with L. reuteri are among the most extensively studied in the world. Over 250 clinical studies involving around 22,000 people have documented the health benefits of BioGaia’s strains of L. reuteri.
L. reuteri probiotic strains – over 600 granted patents
L. reuteri Protectis (DSM 17938), the patented probiotic in BioGaia Protectis Baby Drops and BioGaia Protectis Baby Drops with Vitamin D, has been tested on a strain level in 174 clinical trials with 17,000+ individuals of all ages. The results have been published in a variety of scientific journals.
The unique qualities of Lactobacillus reuteri
L. reuteri has co-evolved with humans, existing in our bodies naturally since the beginning of time. As a human-origin probiotic, its advantages are unique:
- Adaptability: L. reuteri probiotics have evolved alongside humans, making them particularly well-suited to our unique digestive systems. L. reuteri developed mechanisms to thrive in our gut environment, including resistance to stomach acid and bile.
- Specificity: They are more likely to interact favourably with our body's existing microbiome, potentially leading to more targeted and effective benefits.
- Enhanced colonisation: Since they are of human origin, these probiotics are often more compatible with our microbiome, leading to high absorption and overall effectiveness.
Dosage and colonisation
Colonisation in terms of probiotic supplements, refers to the process by which beneficial bacteria, like Lactobacillus reuteri, temporarily adhere to and grow in the gastrointestinal tract. This helps maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, promoting overall digestive wellbeing.
All BioGaia probiotic supplements are clinically-proven to survive the harsh acid environment of the stomach.
L. reuteri It is one of few probiotics in the world that has been shown in a published clinical trial to significantly, however temporarily, colonise the stomach, duodenum and ileum of healthy humans in situ.
